Springtails: Nature's Clean Up Crew

Springtails are a wonderful way to control mould in your setup. They work in tandem with earthworms and isopods helping to maintain the mini-ecosystem that is your bioactive setup. A springtail's main food source is mould arising from decomposing matter. Just like all life, mould’s goal is to reach the fruiting stage and spread its spores. Springtails being present will actively keep mould from maturing as well as breaking down waste and is an excellent way to stop manual intervention in a terrarium.

We recommend adding these live, invertebrate decomposers (clean-up crew/custodians) at least 7-14 days prior to introducing your reptile or amphibian to the enclosure.

Standard tub contains approximately 150-200 springtails. Bulk tub contains approximately 500-700 springtails.

Key Benefits of Springtails in Terrariums

  1. Natural Clean-Up Crew
Springtails feed on decaying organic matter, mold, and fungi. This helps keep the terrarium clean and reduces the risk of harmful mold growth.

  2. Soil Aeration
As they move through the substrate, springtails help aerate the soil, which promotes healthy root growth for plants.

  3. Nutrient Cycling
By breaking down organic waste, springtails contribute to nutrient recycling, enriching the soil and supporting plant health.

  4. Pest Control
They can help control harmful pests like fungus gnats by consuming their eggs and larvae.

  5. Low Maintenance
Springtails are self-sustaining in a well-balanced terrarium. They reproduce quickly and require minimal care once established.

  6. Safe for Other Inhabitants
They pose no threat to reptiles, amphibians, or insects commonly kept in terrariums, making them ideal for mixed-species environments.
