Lava rock (scoria) has always been a popular hardscape material in the aquascaping hobby. Scoria in particular has been desirable for both its unique colours, as well as the ability to grow beneficial bacteria throughout its porous structure. Scoria tends to be lighter in mass than other stones due to porosity.
